How to Crop Photos for Printing
December 15th, 2008
“Understanding Aspect Ration for Printing” by Yanik Chuvian of Yanik’s Photo School is a video tutorial that shows you how to crop your pictures for printing.
Many people who print digital photos are often surprised to discover that the prints do not show the entire frame captured by their camera. This occurs because the aspect ratio of the original digital file does not match the aspect ratio of the printed format. Aspect ratio is the quotient obtained by dividing the length of the long side of your picture by its short side.
In Yanik’s example, 4,288 pixels ÷ 2,848 pixels does not equal 7 inches ÷ 5 inches, therefore his prints must be cropped. His tutorial shows you how to find the aspect ratio of a picture and crop it so that you know exactly how the final print will appear.
